Igor Svyatoslavich

1151–1202 · 12th century · Also known as Igor Sviatoslavich, Igor of Novgorod-Seversk, Prince Igor

Igor Svyatoslavich was prince of Novgorod-Seversk and, from 1198, of Chernigov. In 1185 he led a raid against the Cumans that ended in disaster: his army was destroyed and he was captured, though he later escaped. The campaign is the subject of the Tale of Igor's Campaign, the most famous work of early East Slavic literature, and of Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor.
