Ilhéus
Ilhéus is a port city in southern Bahia, Brazil, founded around 1536 as São Jorge dos Ilhéus, the seat of the hereditary Captaincy of Ilhéus. The colony struggled against indigenous attacks for two centuries. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it became the centre of Brazil's cacao boom, the world of Jorge Amado's novels.
