Bahia
Bahia is a state in north-eastern Brazil, with its capital at Salvador, which was the colonial capital of Brazil until 1763. It was a major destination of the Atlantic slave trade, receiving many enslaved Yoruba people as the Oyo Empire collapsed in the nineteenth century. Yoruba religion and culture strongly shaped Afro-Brazilian traditions there, such as Candomblé.
