Instruction of Vladimir Monomakh

early 12th century · 12th century · Also known as Testament of Vladimir Monomakh

The Instruction of Vladimir Monomakh is a work written by the grand prince of Kiev Vladimir Monomakh, probably in the early twelfth century, as guidance for his sons. It combines advice on the duties of a Christian ruler, such as justice, mercy and keeping one's oath, with an autobiographical account of his many campaigns and hunts. It survives only in the Laurentian copy of the Primary Chronicle, made in 1377.
