Iyasu V

1895–1935 · 20th century · Also known as Lij Iyasu

Iyasu V, known as Lij Iyasu, was the uncrowned emperor of Ethiopia from 1913 to 1916, grandson and designated heir of Menelik II. His suspected leanings towards Islam and the Central Powers led the nobility and church to depose him in 1916 in favour of Zewditu, with Ras Tafari as regent. He spent years in hiding and captivity, and died in 1935.
