James Frazer

1854–1941 · 20th century · Also known as James George Frazer

James Frazer was a Scottish anthropologist and classical scholar, author of The Golden Bough, first published in 1890. His comparative study of magic, religion and myth argued that many societies had divine kings whose vigour was bound to the fertility of the land and who were killed when they weakened, citing the Shilluk reth among his examples. The work influenced anthropology and modern literature.
