South Sudan
South Sudan is a landlocked country in east-central Africa with its capital at Juba. It became independent from Sudan on 9 July 2011 after a referendum held under the peace agreement of 2005 that ended Sudan's second civil war. Africa's newest state fell into civil war in December 2013, and fighting between forces loyal to Salva Kiir and Riek Machar displaced millions of people before a peace agreement in 2018.
