James Hannington

1847–1885 · 19th century

James Hannington was an English Anglican missionary and the first bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa. In 1885 he tried to reach Buganda by the eastern route through Busoga, which the Baganda feared as the direction of invasion. On the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II he was seized and killed in Busoga in October 1885, an event that preceded the persecution of Christians in Buganda.
