James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Claneboye
James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Claneboye, was a Scottish schoolmaster turned agent of James VI who, with Hugh Montgomery, acquired much of Con O'Neill's lordship of Clandeboye in north Down in 1605. Their private settlement brought many Scottish colonists to Ulster before the official Plantation of Ulster, and he developed Bangor as his chief town.
