Jan van Swieten

1807–1888 · 19th century

Jan van Swieten was a Dutch general who commanded the second expedition against the Aceh Sultanate in 1873–1874, after the first had failed and its commander Köhler had been killed. His force captured the sultan's palace in January 1874, and he declared Aceh part of the Dutch East Indies, but Acehnese resistance continued for three decades.
