Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje

1857–1936 · 20th century

Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje was a Dutch scholar of Islam who lived in Mecca in 1885 and became adviser on native and Islamic affairs to the colonial government of the Dutch East Indies. In the Aceh War he urged the Dutch to win over the uleebalang chiefs, crush the religious leaders who led armed resistance and tolerate Islam as a faith, advice that shaped General van Heutsz's campaigns. He later taught at Leiden University.
