3rd century · 3rd century

The Jetavanaramaya is a Buddhist stupa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, begun by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE. Built of brick and originally about 122 metres high, it was among the tallest structures of the ancient world. It belonged to the Jetavana monastery, which rivalled the Mahavihara and Abhayagiri as a centre of Buddhist learning.
