John V, Duke of Brittany

1389–1442 · 15th century

John V was duke of Brittany from 1399 to 1442, the son of John IV. He kept Brittany largely out of the later Hundred Years' War, shifting between England and France, and survived his kidnapping by the rival Penthièvre family in 1420. His long reign brought prosperity, building and administrative development to the duchy.
