José López Portillo

1920–2004 · 20th century

José López Portillo was president of Mexico from 1976 to 1982. Huge oil discoveries in the Bay of Campeche financed a boom and heavy foreign borrowing under his government, but falling oil prices brought a debt crisis in 1982. He devalued the peso, nationalised the banks and left office as the country entered the 'lost decade' of the 1980s.
