José Martí

1853–1895 · 19th century

José Martí was a Cuban poet, journalist and revolutionary, the national hero of Cuba. Exiled for most of his life, mainly in New York, he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party in 1892 to unite the exiles for a new war of independence. He was killed at Dos Ríos on 19 May 1895, soon after landing in Cuba, and his writings shaped Latin American modernismo and Cuban nationalism.
