José Miguel Carrera

1785–1821 · 19th century

José Miguel Carrera was a Chilean independence leader who seized power in a series of coups from 1811. He introduced a provisional constitution, the first national flag and the first press during the Patria Vieja. His rivalry with Bernardo O'Higgins weakened the patriots before the royalist victory of 1814. He was executed in Mendoza in 1821.
