Joseph-François Lambert

1824–1873 · 19th century

Joseph-François Lambert was a French merchant based in Mauritius who befriended Prince Rakoto, the future Radama II of Madagascar. In 1855 Rakoto granted him the Lambert Charter, sweeping rights to exploit land, minerals and timber, which he confirmed as king in 1862. After Radama's murder in 1863 the new government annulled the charter, a dispute France later used to press its claims on Madagascar.
