Radama II

1829–1863 · 19th century

Radama II was king of Madagascar from 1861 to 1863, the son of Ranavalona I. He reversed his mother's policies, freeing Christians, opening the kingdom to foreigners and missionaries and granting vast concessions to Joseph-François Lambert. His favourites and policies alienated the nobility, and he was strangled in a coup in May 1863, after which his widow Rasoherina reigned under the prime minister.
