Ranavalona I

c. 1778–1861 · 19th century

Ranavalona I was queen of the Merina kingdom of Madagascar from 1828 to 1861, widow of Radama I. She resisted European influence, expelled missionaries, persecuted Malagasy Christians and kept up conscription and wars of conquest, and in 1845 her forces repelled a joint British and French attack on Toamasina. Her reign is remembered both for its defence of independence and for its harshness.
