Toamasina

Also known as Tamatave

Toamasina, formerly Tamatave, is the main seaport of Madagascar, on the island's east coast. In the 18th century it was a trading port of the Betsimisaraka coast, and in 1817 Radama I of the Merina Kingdom took it, bringing the east coast under Merina rule. French forces attacked it in 1845 and 1883, and today it handles most of the country's foreign trade.
