Jacques Duchesne

1837–1918 · 19th century

Jacques Duchesne was a French general who commanded the expedition that conquered Madagascar in 1895. Marching inland from Mahajanga with about 15,000 men, many of whom died of disease, he sent a flying column that reached Antananarivo and shelled it into surrender on 30 September 1895. He had earlier served in Algeria and in the Sino-French War.
