Jacques Cassard

1679–1740 · 18th century

Jacques Cassard was a French naval officer and privateer from Nantes. During the War of the Spanish Succession he led a squadron that raided Portuguese, English and Dutch colonies in 1712, including Suriname, where the planters paid a heavy ransom to save their estates. A quarrel with the authorities later led to his imprisonment, and he died in the fortress of Joux.
