Ndyuka

Also known as Aukan, Ndyuka people

The Ndyuka are a maroon people of eastern Suriname and French Guiana, descended from enslaved Africans who escaped from Dutch plantations into the rainforest in the 18th century. After years of conflict the colonial government made a peace treaty with them in 1760, recognising their freedom. They live mainly along the Tapanahony and Marowijne rivers under their own paramount chief, the gaanman.
