Tobago
Tobago is a Caribbean island north-east of Trinidad, with which it forms the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was contested by the Dutch, Courlanders, English, French and Spanish and changed hands many times. It was ceded to Britain in 1763 and, after periods of French rule, finally in 1814, becoming a sugar colony that was joined to Trinidad in 1889.
