Andrianampoinimerina

c. 1745–1810 · 18th century

Andrianampoinimerina was king of Imerina in the central highlands of Madagascar from around 1787 to 1810. Starting from Ambohimanga, he reunited the divided Merina chiefdoms, made Antananarivo his capital, expanded irrigated rice farming and organised forced labour, and declared that the sea would be the border of his rice field. His son Radama I extended Merina rule over most of the island.
