    Beethoven dates the manuscript of Für Elise

    Beethoven's autograph of the Bagatelle in A minor carried the date 27 April 1810. Unpublished in his lifetime, it appeared in 1867 and became one of the best-known piano pieces.

  2. 9 July

    Napoleon annexes the Kingdom of Holland to France

    Days after his brother Louis abdicated rather than enforce the blockade of British trade, Napoleon decreed Holland's annexation to the French Empire. Dutch independence was restored only in 1813.

    Bogotá rises against Spanish rule

    A quarrel over a borrowed flower vase sparked an uprising in Bogotá that created a governing junta. Colombia celebrates 20 July as its Independence Day; full independence came after Bolívar's victory in 1819.

    Miguel Hidalgo's 'Grito de Dolores' launches Mexico's revolt

    Priest Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell in Dolores and called his parishioners to rise against Spanish rule. Mexico celebrates the day as Independence Day, won in 1821.

    Crown Prince Ludwig's wedding gives rise to Oktoberfest

    Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, and Munich's citizens were invited to celebrate on the fields before the city gates. The festivities, crowned by a horse race, became the annual Oktoberfest.
