Andreas Hofer

1767–1810 · 18th century

Andreas Hofer was a Tyrolean innkeeper who led the uprising of 1809 against Bavarian and French rule in Tyrol. His peasant militia won several battles at Bergisel near Innsbruck, and he governed Tyrol for some months, but after Austria made peace the revolt collapsed. Betrayed and captured, he was shot by the French at Mantua in 1810 and became a Tyrolean national hero.
