Andrea Palladio

1508–1580 · 16th century

Andrea Palladio was an architect of the Venetian Republic, active mainly in Vicenza and Venice. His villas on the Venetian mainland, his palaces in Vicenza and his Venetian churches, San Giorgio Maggiore and the Redentore, applied the forms of ancient Roman architecture with great clarity. His treatise The Four Books of Architecture (1570) spread his style across Europe, especially to Britain and North America.
