Claudio Monteverdi
Claudio Monteverdi was an Italian composer whose work bridged Renaissance and Baroque music. After serving the Gonzaga court at Mantua, where he wrote L'Orfeo (1607), one of the first great operas, he became director of music at St Mark's Basilica in Venice in 1613. In Venice he wrote sacred music, madrigals and late operas, including The Coronation of Poppea, for the new public opera houses.
