Claudius

10 BCE–54 CE · 1st century · Also known as Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus

Claudius was Roman emperor from 41 to 54 CE, proclaimed by the Praetorian Guard after the murder of his nephew Caligula. His reign saw the invasion of Britain in 43 and the organisation of Mauretania, Lycia, Thrace and Judea as provinces, and he admitted Gallic nobles to the Senate. He was probably poisoned by his wife Agrippina, who secured the throne for her son Nero.
