Battle of Hanau

1813 · 19th century · Part of the War of the Sixth Coalition

The Battle of Hanau was fought on 30–31 October 1813 near Hanau in Hesse, where an Austro-Bavarian army under Karl Philipp von Wrede tried to cut off Napoleon's retreat to France after his defeat at Leipzig. Napoleon broke through and reached the Rhine. Bavaria had changed sides only weeks earlier under the Treaty of Ried.
