Krishna Kumari

c. 1794–1810 · 19th century

Krishna Kumari was a princess of Mewar, daughter of Maharana Bhim Singh. Her hand was sought by the rulers of Jaipur and Jodhpur, and their rivalry over the betrothal led to a ruinous war in which the Pindari leader Amir Khan and Maratha armies also intervened. In 1810, under pressure from Amir Khan, she was given poison to end the dispute. James Tod's account made her story one of the best-known tragedies of Rajput history.
