Maharana
Maharana, 'great rana', was the royal title of the rulers of Mewar, whose capital was Chittor and from 1559 Udaipur, and of a few other Rajput states such as Porbandar. The rulers of Mewar bore it for centuries as a mark of their claim to precedence among the Rajput princes. Like other princely titles in India, it lost official recognition when the privileges of the former rulers were abolished in 1971.
