Maharana Pratap

1540–1597 · 16th century · Also known as Pratap Singh I

Maharana Pratap was the Rajput ruler of Mewar from 1572 to 1597. He refused to submit to the Mughal emperor Akbar and fought a Mughal army led by Man Singh I at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Though defeated, he continued guerrilla resistance from the hills and recovered much of Mewar before his death, becoming a lasting symbol of Rajput independence.
