Dharampur State

1262 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dharampur

A Sisodia Rajput state in the hills of southern Gujarat, whose 20th-century ruler was a noted patron and scholar of Indian music.

Origins

The ruling family claimed descent from the Sisodias of Mewar, and tradition dates their arrival in the hills inland from Valsad to 1262. The capital was moved to the new town of Dharampur in the 18th century.

Rule and society

Dharampur was a largely forested state with many Kokna and Warli people. It paid chauth to the Marathas and later came under British supervision through the Surat Agency. Maharana Vijayadevji, who ruled in the first half of the 20th century, wrote on music and supported musicians.

Decline and legacy

Dharampur merged into Bombay State in 1948 and is now in Valsad district, Gujarat.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
