Ranau

Ranau is a town in the hills of western Sabah, Malaysia, near Mount Kinabalu. In 1945 it was the destination of the Sandakan death marches, when Japanese guards forced Allied prisoners of war to march about 260 kilometres from Sandakan through jungle; of some 2,400 prisoners held at Sandakan, only six Australians survived, all escapees.
