Mauritius
Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometres off the south-east coast of Africa. Uninhabited until the Dutch settled it in 1638, it was ruled by France as Isle de France from 1715 and by Britain from 1810, when sugar plantations worked first by enslaved and then by indentured Indian labourers shaped its population. It became independent in 1968 and a republic in 1992.
