Mauritsstad
Mauritsstad was the planned town built by Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen on the island of Antônio Vaz beside Recife, the capital of Dutch Brazil, from the late 1630s. It included his palaces of Vrijburg and Boa Vista, gardens, canals and a bridge linking it to Recife. After the Dutch surrender in 1654 it became part of Recife, forming the district of Santo Antônio.
