Juan de Carvajal

d. 1546 · 16th century

Juan de Carvajal was a Spanish conquistador who governed Venezuela as acting governor in the 1540s, after the Welser company's authority weakened. In 1545 he founded El Tocuyo in the interior. In 1546 he had the Welser expedition leaders Philipp von Hutten and Bartholomäus Welser the younger killed. Tried for the murders by the new governor Juan Pérez de Tolosa, he was executed later that year.
