Juan de Ampíes

d. 1533 · 16th century

Juan de Ampíes was a Spanish royal official at Santo Domingo who was entrusted with the coast of Venezuela and the nearby islands of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. In 1527 he founded the town of Coro on the Venezuelan coast, seeking to deal peacefully with the local Caquetío people. The next year the Crown leased the province to the Welser bankers, who took over his settlement.
