Person
Juan Gerardi
Juan Gerardi (1922–1998) was a Guatemalan Catholic bishop and human rights defender. As auxiliary bishop of Guatemala he led the church's Recovery of Historical Memory project, whose report Guatemala: Never Again, presented on 24 April 1998, attributed the great majority of wartime atrocities to the army and its allies. He was beaten to death at his parish house two days later, and army officers were later convicted of the murder.
