Juan Velasco Alvarado

1910–1977 · 20th century

Juan Velasco Alvarado was a Peruvian general who seized power in a coup in October 1968 and ruled as president until other officers removed him in 1975. His Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces nationalised the International Petroleum Company and other foreign firms, carried out one of Latin America's most sweeping agrarian reforms, and made Quechua an official language. Economic crisis and his failing health led to his overthrow.
