Jules Brunet

1838–1911 · 19th century

Jules Brunet was a French army officer sent with a military mission to train the shogunate's troops in 1867. When the Boshin War broke out he left the French army and joined the shogunate loyalists, serving the Republic of Ezo as an adviser until its defeat in 1869. He later rose to general and chief of staff to the French war minister, and his story partly inspired the film The Last Samurai.
