Khatyn massacre

1943 · 20th century

The Khatyn massacre was the destruction of the village of Khatyn in Belarus by a German auxiliary police battalion and SS troops on 22 March 1943. Its 149 inhabitants, including 75 children, were burned in a barn or shot in reprisal for a partisan attack. A memorial complex opened on the site in 1969 commemorates them and the hundreds of other Belarusian villages destroyed during the occupation.
