Kiritimati
Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is a large coral atoll in the Line Islands of the central Pacific and part of Kiribati. Sighted by James Cook on Christmas Eve 1777, it was annexed by Britain in 1888 and joined the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony in 1919. Britain carried out hydrogen bomb tests there in 1957–1958, and the United States tested nuclear weapons nearby in 1962.
