Gilbert Islands
The Gilbert Islands are a chain of sixteen coral atolls in the central Pacific, inhabited by Micronesian I-Kiribati. Britain declared a protectorate over them in 1892, joined them with the Ellice Islands as a colony, and they became the core of independent Kiribati in 1979. The atoll kingdom of Abemama lay in the central group.
