Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery

1397 · 14th century · Also known as Kirillov Monastery

The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery is a monastery at Kirillov in Vologda Oblast, Russia, founded in 1397 by the monk Cyril of White Lake on the shore of the Siverskoye lake. Favoured by the grand princes and tsars, it became one of the largest landowners in Russia and a centre of learning, with a famous library. Its stone walls of the 16th and 17th centuries made it a fortress, and it is now a museum.
