La Cucaracha

origins obscure; mentioned in an 1819 Mexican novel; verses from the Hispano-Moroccan War (1859–1860); most known verses from the Mexican Revolution (1910–c. 1920) · 19th century

"La Cucaracha" ("The Cockroach") is a folk song whose refrain tells of a cockroach that has lost two of its legs and can no longer walk properly. Its origins are obscure and Spanish. Because the refrain names no event, it cannot be dated, but its verses were made up anew for each time and place and so can be roughly dated by the events they mention.
