La Demajagua
La Demajagua was the sugar estate of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes near Manzanillo in eastern Cuba. There, on 10 October 1868, Céspedes freed his slaves and proclaimed Cuban independence in the Grito de Yara, beginning the Ten Years' War. The site, damaged by Spanish shelling, is now a national monument, and its bell is a symbol of Cuban independence.
