La Cosiata

1826 · 19th century · Also known as Cosiata

La Cosiata was a political movement and revolt in Venezuela in 1826, led by José Antonio Páez against the government of Gran Colombia in Bogotá. It began when Congress summoned Páez to answer charges, and Venezuelan towns backed his refusal. Bolívar returned from Peru and pardoned Páez in 1827, but the revolt foreshadowed Venezuela's secession in 1830.
